HP voted Best Employer: The People’s Choice 2002 SIA leads among Singapore companies
Jul 10, 2002

Hewlett-Packard was voted the company that people would love most to work for in Singapore, according to a Best Employer: The People’s Choice 2002 survey conducted by JobStreet.com. Other companies placed in the Top 5 are Singapore Airlines, IBM, Citibank, and Agilent Technologies.

Respondents cited HP’s people-oriented culture as the main attribute which differentiates HP from other employers. “Although many companies espouse to be people-oriented, HP stood out to many respondents as the company that truly practices it,” commented Malek Ali, Vice-President of JobStreet.com. Respondents pointed to HP’s culture of empowerment, mutual respect and trust, which manifests itself in popular policies such as good remuneration and benefits, flexible working hours and good opportunities for career development and personal growth. “These policies have served HP well, even through today’s uncertain environment caused by the HP-Compaq merger,” added Malek Ali.

Singapore Airlines received the highest number of votes among Singapore companies, earning it the overall runner-up position, ahead of other multinationals such as IBM, Citibank and Agilent. For Singapore Airlines, voters cited the airline carrier’s stability in what is a difficult period for the industry, management leadership and pride in the Singapore company being a global leader. A number of voters specifically mentioned Singapore Airlines delivering on its promise of restoring pay-cuts if certain milestones were achieved.

JobStreet.com launched its inaugural Best Employer: The People’s Choice award in June to pay tribute to organisations that are perceived by the public as their favourite organisation to work for. The winning organisation was selected based on the highest number of votes in an online survey conducted by JobStreet. This year, the survey garnered 1537 respondents and 156 nominations.

Nominations were categorized into three categories: Best Multinational Companies, Singapore Companies and Government/Statutory Bodies. Rankings in each category are listed in the tables below.

JobStreet.com will be presenting findings of this survey at a seminar on 25 July 2002 at Mandarin Singapore.
