Maybe you've not been getting enough sleep, or you just enjoy heavy lunches. Whatever the reason, there are ways you can stay alert and energised throughout the day. Healthier ways than downing endless cups of coffee, to be more specific. The next time you struggle to keep those eyes open, try the following tips. It will save you the embarrassment of being caught dozing off in a department meeting or in front of your computer.

1. Avoid Heavy Lunches

If you know you have an important meeting right after lunch, do yourself a favour and stay away from a carb-heavy lunch. Even on regular days, having a lighter meal will prevent you from slipping into a carb coma when you're sitting at your desk after lunch. Having a meal with higher fiber and protein and lower on carbs is also better for your health, so you'll be killing two birds with one stone!

2. Listen to Upbeat Music

Make good use of those headphones. Listen to some upbeat tunes on Spotify while you're working. It's a great way to perk up and lift those spirits as well. There's nothing like a dose of Rihanna or Bruno Mars to add some spice to your work day.

3. Get Moving

Sitting in one position for hours is never a good thing. Besides falling asleep in front of your computer, sitting for long periods is a common cause for chronic back pain. So do yourself a favour and walk around periodically. Stretch those legs and stay active.

4. Sit Up Straight

Leaning back against your chair might feel comfortable, but being too comfortable and relaxed tricks your body into thinking you're in a resting state. Guess what happens next? Your eyelids start drooping and before you know it, all you want to do is take a nap. So sit up straight. Not only will you stay awake, your back will thank you for it when you get older.

5. Talk to Your Workmates

Engage in conversation with your co-workers. Bounce ideas around or share a few jokes. Laughter is always a good way to boost one's energy, apart from the benefits of bonding with your team members.

6. Get a Whiff of Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is an ideal natural stimulant with its invigorating and cooling effects. Simply get a quick whiff of it and you'll instantly feel more energised and awake. You can also place a couple of drops of the oil on your fingertips and gently massage your temples for a quick pick-me-up.

7. Snack on Healthy Energy Foods

Feeling peckish? Stay away from coma-inducing carbs and go for healthier snacks such as avocado, whole grains and nuts instead. They're high in protein which will give you the energy boost you need, minus the drowse-inducing spells.

8. Splash Cold Water on Your Face

If all else fails, splashing cold water on your face will definitely snap you out of your sleepy fog. Not only will it give your system the shock it needs, you definitely won't feel like sleeping after that.
