5 Ways to Prepare Yourself to Return to the Office

One year after companies shifted to a remote working scheme, more employees may be facing a return to the office. The multi-ministry task force in Singapore announced that 75% of staff can resume working in a physical workplace, with split teams no longer required.

Although the task force still encourages employers to implement staggered times and flexible working arrangements, there is a good chance of a reunion with your work desk. That said, this does not signal a mere return to "business as usual." Expect changes to the post-pandemic workplace, from physical arrangements in line with social distancing protocols to new working dynamics and arrangements.

This period is filled with disruptions and transitions--after all, it was only last year when we had to adjust to a new WFH system. Now, we're about to transition to the office just as we were getting into the groove of working remotely.

Here are ways to mentally prepare yourself to return to the office

Review your workplace's safety protocols

A few days before your first day back at work, take time to review your workplace's health and safety protocols. This is to set your expectations when you return to the office. It will also ensure a smoother transition as it calms your nerves about leaving your now-comfortable work-from-home setup.

You can also ease your fears by reviewing your own checklist on what you should expect at a safe workplace, based on guidelines by the COVID-19 multi-ministry task force.

Plan a new routine

While going back to work may look a lot like your old habits, remember that there will be some changes. You could be facing a new work hour, or you might be changing start times each week. Adapt by planning a new routine. This may include preparing your lunches or work files the night before or mapping out your commute in advance.

Manage your expectations

As you return to the workplace, it is important to manage your expectations and be flexible. Keep in mind that the office may look different. After all, protocols will be in place.

Many of you will be on the same boat, trying to navigate through office life amid the new normal. Be patient and keep an open mind so that you don't end up with a short fuse or become irritated when faced with new changes. Remember that the changes aren't only affecting you; your employers are also doing their best to adapt and learn in this new environment.

Reconnect with your colleagues

While you may have been conversing online, take the time to reconnect and communicate with your colleagues on your first day back at work. Schedule a socially distanced lunch or coffee break so you can share your thoughts, concerns, and expectations about this new arrangement.

Hearing what they have to say, as well as being able to share similar concerns may put you at ease. Remember, you are not going through this alone. This also gives you a chance to recalibrate your workplace dynamics so you can maintain smooth working relationships even with the transition.

Bring a sense of humour to work

As you return to your work desk, remember to bring joy to the workplace. The sudden and abrupt modifications at work may create some teething issues and awkward moments in the beginning. Instead of being irritated or nervous, see if you can find a lighter side to the situation. You can even gather your colleagues at the end of each week and share your new-normal highs and lows, so you can all laugh about it and learn from each experience.

With vaccination programmes and certain regulations being adjusted , workplaces are seeing more employees back at the office. . Bear in mind that the new workplace arrangement is an adjustment for everyone. Each day is a chance to learn and improve for the #JobsThatMatter.
