Life lessons from gaming

By Rakel Tang

With popularity in gaming reaching new heights, this JobStreet writer reflects on the lessons she's learnt while playing a popular multi-million title.

You know what they say: work hard, play hard. After a long day at work, playing games is a great way to unwind and de-stress. One such game that has captivated the masses lately isGenshinImpact.

In September 2020, Chinese game studio miHoYo released the free-to-play open world role playing gameGenshinImpact.By its first month,GenshinImpacthad raked in $245 millionin revenue formiHoYoon mobile. By its first year, this number had swelled to a whopping $2 billion.

More than ayear later,GenshinImpactis still going strong, churning out new updates for the game every six weeks, and releasing new story linesto play through, new charactersto collect, and new enemiesto battle.Seeing the impact it has on the gaming community, we dug a little deeper and unearth some life lessons we can learn from it.

How much do you think you have to spend to get these characters? (The answer: Not enough.)

1. Plan ahead for what you want

A notable feature ofGenshin Impactis the gacha system, whereby players can use an in-game currency called primogems to obtain strong characters for your team.

For a certain amount of primogems, you can pull from a pool of characters and the character that arrives at your doorstep is completely randomised. When you run out of primogems, you can either find ways to obtain more in the game or top up with cash.

Due to the random nature of the gacha system, players can often end up spending large amounts of money just to get the character they want. In order not to break your bank for the character of your dreams, careful planning must be involved. Like with anything you want, don't give in to impulsive purchases. Instead, be prudent and set aside a fixed budget for spending or save up for it.

When you try your best, but you don't succeed.

2. Take disappointment in stride

Given the randomised nature of the gacha system, it is entirely possible to spend more than a hundred tries and thousands of primogems to get the character of your dreams only for them to refuse to show up. In this case, you can either pump in more money, or walk away.

Disappointment is often a part of life and while the sting hurts, you have to learn to shake it off or end up doing something you might regret.

New and old faces. Which one to spend all your hard-earned savings on?

3. There will always be new opportunities in the future

Even if you don't get the character you want now, there will always be new opportunities in future.Genshin Impactoften brings back characters that were previously released and gives players a chance to pull for them once more. In the meantime, you might discover a new favourite and decide to focus your energy and savings on them instead.

Much like in life, new opportunities are always around the corner and it is up to you to decide how you want to seize them.

Tell me your ancient secrets, wall.

4. Go off track to find new treasures

WhileGenshin Impacthas a main story for players to follow, one of the key selling points of the game is its open world system that encourages the player to roam around the world and discover hidden quests and treasures.

Life is pretty much the same—you might have a dream or path in life you want to follow but if you decide to take a trip down a sideroad, you might uncover something new and exciting that might even help you in your main quest in life.

Thank you, boss.

5. It is okay to ask for help

Genshin Impacthas a co-op system where up to three other players, friends or strangers, can enter your world and aid you in completing difficult quests or simply hang out with you. While it is possible to play this game on your own, it never hurts to ask for help when you need it. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a sign that you know yourself well enough to recognise when you are struggling and to look for a way to share the burden.

It is always better to over-prepare than to under-prepare.

6. Strategy is key

The combat system inGenshin Impactinvolves using a party of up to four characters to defeat monsters. Each character can wield a different element (fire, water, ice, lightning, earth, and wind) and the player can switch between characters to trigger elemental reactions by combining different elements together. Each of these elemental reactions have unique properties and it is up to the player to decide which combination of elements is the best to defeat certain monsters efficiently. By having a good grasp on the mechanics of the game and the characters that can trigger them, you can devise a solid strategy to blast past all the enemies in the game.

The same goes for working in a team—if you have good grasp on the team's skillsets and can organise them in a way that amplifies each other's strengths, any obstacle in your way can be defeated in a flash.

There is only pain.

7. Invest in good WiFi

A lousy internet connection is the enemy of all people. If your wi-fi is down while you are playing, especially in timed quests or when fighting particularly strong enemies, you are in for a world of suffering. If you are going to work hard and play hard, it never hurts to invest in good WiFi to reduce your chances of experiencing an issue that can cause you frustration later down the line.
