What's it like to be an Accounting Manager?
Accounting Managers establish the accounting systems and procedures that Accountants use to collect, analyse, and assess financial data for a company. Their primary responsibility is to manage all financial reporting requirements within an organisation. They work with the Chief Financial Officer to establish guidelines and policies and then oversee the department to ensure employees adhere to proper protocols.

- Overseeing the daily operations of the accounting department.
- Developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
- Managing and supervising accounting staff.
- Preparing and analysing financial statements and reports.
- Conducting financial audits and reviews.
- Monitoring and operating cash flow and budgeting.
- Working with other departments to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Communicating financial information to senior management and stakeholders.
- Providing financial analysis and advice to support business decisions.
- Managing relationships with external auditors and tax authorities.
How to become an Accounting Manager
To become an Accounting Manager, it is necessary to obtain a bachelor or master's degree in finance, accounting, or business administration. Specific organisations may also mandate certifications as a professional, such as a Chartered Accountant.
Complete a degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field.
Start at an entry-level position, such as Accounting Intern. This will help you learn best practices in Singapore taxation and be mentored by senior staff members.
As you gain experience, acquire additional certifications, such as becoming a Chartered Global Management Accountant or a Certified Public Accountant licence. Both are recognised by the Singaporean Accountancy Commission (SAC).
Pursue a master’s degree in finance, accounting, or an MBA that will develop your expertise further.
Seek senior roles for career advancement and aim to become a Controller or CFO.
