What's it like to be a Facilities Engineer?
Facilities Engineers are responsible for the effective operation, maintenance and optimisation of a building's infrastructure, including its heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, electrical systems and other equipment. They develop preventive maintenance programs, suggest enhancements for energy efficiency and solve ongoing facility operational issues. Usually found in sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, universities and large commercial buildings, these engineers work to ensure a smoothly run facility.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing the functionality, safety and efficiency of building systems and infrastructure.
- Developing and implementing preventive maintenance programs.
- Inspecting buildings' structures to determine the need for repairs or renovations.
- Coordinating with architects and contractors in the planning and execution of new facility projects.
