What's it like to be an Industrial Engineer?
Industrial Engineers are responsible for improving efficiency in using an organisation's resources, including materials and employees, and finding ways to improve a product or service. Their primary responsibility is to oversee the design, implementation, and operation of systems that integrate people, finance, knowledge, and equipment to improve productivity and revenue. Industrial Engineers work in various industries, from manufacturing to retail, food and beverage, transportation, technology, telecommunications, and health.
Tasks and duties
- Analysing production processes and identifying areas for improvement.
- Developing and implementing new systems to optimise production.
- Designing layouts for factories and other industrial facilities.
- Monitoring and analysing production data to identify efficiency issues.
- Creating and implementing safety protocols for workers and equipment.
- Working with other engineers and professionals towards a common goal to ensure smooth production processes.
- Conducting cost-benefit analyses for proposed changes to production systems.
- Developing and managing budgets for industrial projects.
How to become an Industrial Engineer
To work as an Industrial Engineer you need a bachelor degree in industrial engineering or a related field.
Complete a degree in industrial, mechanical, or civil engineering.
Gain full licensure as an Engineer by passing the necessary exams and other requirements of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
Build your experience to learn more about the role in an entry-level position where there is an opportunity to learn from more experienced Engineers and the challenges of the job.
To add to your expertise and knowledge, consider obtaining additional qualifications, such as Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CME), or Six Sigma Certification.
Join an engineering professional organisation, such as the Professional Engineers Board (PEB) or The Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES), that will help you stay updated on the latest technologies and techniques necessary to improve processes.
Consider pursuing a master's degree, which may be an advantage when seeking promotion.
