What's it like to be an IT Manager?
An IT (Information Technology) Manager oversees a company’s networks, systems and staff. They align a company’s entire technological direction with its business strategies to create more value for customers. As a supervisor, an IT Manager is often also in charge of training Computer Programmers and Database Administrators.
Tasks and duties
- Maintaining the integrity and accuracy of hardware and software applications.
- Coordinating the regular audit of technological systems with an IT Auditor.
- Initiating and managing system updates, migrations, and other IT projects.
- Training IT staff and, upon need, other employees.
- Managing the IT department’s annual budget.
- Keeping a company’s technological products and processes updated and innovative.
How to become an IT Manager
IT Managers need basic tertiary education and relevant working experience in the IT industry.
Earn a bachelor degree in information technology, computer science, business management, project management, or any related field.
Continue on to completing a masters degree in information technology or business administration. This is not a requirement, but the additional knowledge will be useful.
Complete an internship under an experienced IT Manager to develop skills in IT auditing, network security, project coordination, and other related areas. Since IT management is a supervisory role, companies generally require at least three years of relevant experience.
