What's it like to be a Clinical Coder?
A Clinical Coder, also known as a Medical Records Coder, works at a healthcare facility such as a hospital or clinic. They examine patients’ medical information such as lab reports, medical diagnoses, and procedures into classification codes used for billing and documentation purposes.

- Translating medical records using the international coding classification system.
- Ensuring completeness and accuracy of coding.
- Consulting doctors as needed on the documentation of diagnoses and procedures.
- Managing and monitoring coders’ workload report.
- Training new clinical coders.
- Pursuing further studies and training for new coding standards.
How to become a Clinical Coder
To become a Clinical Coder you usually need a bachelor degree in a relevant field and knowledge of ICD classification systems.
Graduate with a bachelor degree in health science, nursing, or a paramedical course.
Become well-versed in ICD classification systems.
Master Microsoft Excel.
After gaining experience as a Clinical Coder, consider progressing to a role such as a Senior Clinical Coder.
