What's it like to be an Occupational Therapist?
An Occupational Therapist is a healthcare specialist that helps people recover or regain the total or partial ability to perform certain daily tasks. They usually work with patients who have suffered a serious injury, or have a disability or illness that prevents them from performing certain activities. They help patients move independently by teaching them stretches or exercises that improve mobility and confidence.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing clients to create treatment plans.
- Advising adjustments to home and work environments that enhance a client's recovery.
- Recommending equipment that helps clients perform certain daily activities.
- Creating and running programs that aim to rehabilitate clients and improve their mobility.
- Educating and advising family members, friends and caregivers on assistive and supportive care for clients.
- Continuously monitoring client progress and updating treatment plans.
How to become an Occupational Therapist
To become an Occupational Therapist in Singapore, you need a formal qualification and registration with the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC).
Graduate with at least a polytechnic diploma in occupational therapy or Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy.
Apply for registration under the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) upon graduation and seek employment in Singapore to practise. This will be followed by 1 to 2 years of supervision under AHPC before you become an Occupational Therapist that’s able to practise independently.
