What's it like to be a Psychologist?
A Psychologist applies psychological concepts to understand a person’s behaviour and helps them cope with and handle mental health challenges. A Psychologist, whether clinical, counselling, or educational, usually deals with clients on a regular basis, evaluating their needs and planning appropriate intervention programmes such as therapy, counselling, and advice.
Tasks and duties
- Using various assessment tools and methods such as psychometric tests, interviews, and observation of behaviour to evaluate psychological condition, needs, and abilities.
- Completing results, case notes, and other documents to interpret psychological assessments and make appropriate recommendations for intervention.
- Providing psychotherapy and designing programmes for those who need regular counselling.
- Facilitating individual and group interventions and collaborating with other health professionals to guide in the holistic intervention of an individual.
- Developing or executing health programmes, protocols, and clinical guidelines in line with larger health interventions or campaigns such as anti-smoking or addiction recovery.
How to become a Psychologist
To become a Psychologist, you must be a registered practitioner. A Psychologist must also have empathy and patience.
Graduate with a bachelor degree in psychology, with at least 2nd upper class honours to qualify for a masters degree.
Apply for a masters degree in applied psychology (with a focus on either clinical, counselling, or educational psychology).
Complete a practicum experience under the masters programme.
Register with the Singapore Register of Psychologists.
