What's it like to be a Social Worker?
Social Workers provide assistance and advice to vulnerable individuals and communities, such as people struggling with drug addiction, victims of abuse, and the marginalised. They visit sites to connect with individuals and communities and act as a bridge between them and government services. Social Workers can be found in state organisations, rehabilitation centres, clinics, prisons, and other community institutions.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting on-site visits to vulnerable individuals and communities.
- Providing counselling, interviews, and consultations for clients.
- Liaising with government agencies to provide services for clients.
- Creating rehabilitation, wellness, and safety programs.
- Recording and reporting client information.
- Participating in crisis intervention.
How to become a Social Worker
A degree in social work and experience in community service efforts are preferred for the role.

Complete a bachelor degree in social work.
- 2.
Gain experience by undertaking immersions and volunteer work, and by participating in community outreach efforts.

Choose an area of specialisation. Social workers may specialise in children, family, elderly, rehabilitation, or mental health.

Get accredited by the Singapore Association of Social Workers as a Social Worker-Provisional. You will need a bachelor degree in social work, less than 1 year of work experience, and 2 character references.

After gaining experience in the industry, get accredited by the Singapore Association of Social Workers as a Registered Social Worker. You will need at least 1 year of work experience, 80 hours of in-employment training, 1000 hours of supervised practice, at least 3 years of experience in the field, and at least 2 character references.

Consider taking postgraduate studies in social work.
