What's it like to be a Case Mananger?
Case Managers help people and their families get the help or resources they need to recover from illness or health challenges. They assess and evaluate the best course of care clients need based on different factors such as circumstances, resources and personal requirements. Each client receives a personalised treatment plan from a Case Manager based on the evaluation. Case Managers can work in different settings. They may work in hospitals, not-for-profit organisations or centres that help specific groups such as veterans or children. Case Managers need to be strong communicators who practise empathy. They also need to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers so they can provide the best plan of care for their clients.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing and evaluating client needs.
- Preparing plans of care and discussing them with clients and their families.
- Contacting partners who can provide the required healthcare services.
- Connecting clients to the services and resources they need to implement their plan of care.
- Ensuring plans are followed and complied with.
- Scheduling appointments and meetings with clients and partners.
- Advocating for clients when negotiating with stakeholders such as insurance claims.
How to become a Case Mananger
Case Managers don’t necessarily need a degree, but employers may favour job seekers with a degree related to healthcare or psychology.
Graduate with a degree from a university. Consider a healthcare degree or a degree in social work, counselling, sociology or psychology.
Complete an internship in case management or social work. Use this time to learn from seasoned Case Managers.
After a few years of work, consider further building your knowledge base by pursuing further studies with a masters degree in social work or psychology. This will help you provide better care for patients.
