What's it like to be a Personal Banker?
Personal Bankers assist companies and other clients with finance needs. They may recommend and sell banking goods and services, including savings accounts, credit cards, loans, or investment options that meet the client’s requirements. Personal Bankers also answer client complaints and fix problems with their accounts, transactions, or banking services.
Tasks and duties
- Building relationships with clients and serving as their primary point of contact to meet their banking needs.
- Assisting clients in opening or closing bank accounts, as well as monitoring account activities such as deposits, withdrawals, and statements.
- Supporting clients in completing loan applications for personal loans, mortgages, and credit cards.
- Assuring that all interactions and transactions comply with banking regulations and policies.
- Promoting a variety of banking products and services, such as insurance and retirement accounts, among others.
How to become a Personal Banker
To work as a Personal Banker, a bachelor degree in a relevant field such as accounting, business or finance is usually required.
Complete a bachelor degree in accounting, business, finance, or another business-related program.
Look for entry-level jobs in the banking field, such as Bank Teller, Customer Service Representative, or Financial Advisor.
Obtain the relevant licences and certifications. These include the Capital Markets and Financial Advisory Services (CMFAS) certification, to sell financial products and provide financial advice to clients in Singapore.
Actively attend business events. You can also consider joining financial associations, and network with experts already in the financial field. Becoming a Personal Banker relies heavily on building client relationships.
