What's it like to be a Pharmacy Assistant?
Pharmacy Assistants typically focus on customer service and administrative duties. In addition to retail pharmacies, Pharmacy Assistants can work in medical centres, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and drug wholesalers. Their main duty is to help patients get the correct medication for their health needs.
Tasks and duties
- Attending to patients and pharmacy customers.
- Managing inventory, which includes monitoring drug expiry dates and ensuring buffer stock.
- Checking, labelling and packing medicines.
- Performing cashier duties.
- Answering customer phone calls and performing other administrative tasks assigned by a pharmacy technician or pharmacist.
How to become a Pharmacy Assistant
To become a Pharmacy Assistant, you will need a relevant undergraduate degree, certification or vocational diploma from an institution accredited by the Ministry of Health Singapore.
Complete a degree in pharmaceutical science or a related course. Alternatively, prospective Pharmacy Assistants can secure a vocational diploma from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or complete a Higher Certificate in the Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) course in Healthcare Support (Pharmacy Support). All three require either N- or O-level certification to enter.
Gain experience in a pharmacy or healthcare setting. You could start off in a customer service role in a pharmacy. Alternatively, you may be able to enter a Pharmacy Assistant role straight after graduating and receive on-the-job training.
