What's it like to be a Site Engineer?
Site Engineers play a significant role in the planning and designing of construction projects. They manage construction, draft blueprints, and collaborate with Construction Project Managers, Site Supervisors, Architects, Designers, and other stakeholders. Some employers may expect Site Engineers to also work with external vendors, with the help of procurement, to select materials, plan logistics, and perform other related tasks required to successfully complete a project on time and on spec.
Tasks and duties
- Organising work crews, the building materials, and tools needed.
- Preparing cost estimates on operations and materials required to complete the project.
- Planning and designing construction plans.
- Collaborating with relevant stakeholders to deliver projects on time.
- Providing relevant technical advice during construction work.
- Conducting quality assurance assessments during the project.
How to become a Site Engineer
Becoming a Site Engineer generally requires completing a related engineering degree and gaining one to three years of experience in on-site construction.
Complete a related engineering degree such as civil engineering. This may take four years of study.
Register with the Professional Engineer's Board (PEB).
Pass the Practice of Professional Engineering Exam (PPE) supervised by the PEB.
Start with an Assistant Engineer position and work your way up the ranks.
Take additional professional certifications such as work safety and other construction-related certifications.
Stay up-to-date on regulations under the jurisdiction of Singapore's main regulatory authorities in the construction industry, such as Building and Construction Authority and National Environment Agency.
Leverage your experience in on-site construction and hone your leadership skills to take on more senior roles as a Site Engineer.
