What's it like to be a Systems Administrator?
Systems Administrators are responsible for the maintenance and security of a company’s computer systems. With their expertise, Systems Administrators anticipate potential issues and address them before they become a problem. They install antivirus and malware protection software so that employees can use computers safely, and also ensure that systems are user-friendly. Systems Administrators coordinate with other IT professionals to upgrade software and further enhance user experience. They also draft documents to instruct employees on the proper use of software.
Tasks and duties
- Configuring software, hardware and networks.
- Analysing system performance and troubleshooting to check for issues.
- Implementing cyber security measures.
- Setting up accounts and work stations for employees.
- Building internal information systems with technical documentation, manuals and company policies.
- Performing backup operations and implementing necessary processes for data protection.
How to become a Systems Administrator
To excel in this role, you need to have a formal qualification. Prior experience will also be valuable and can boost your employability.
Complete a bachelor degree in information technology, computer science, software engineering or a related field. These programmes will equip you with the necessary skills needed to oversee and manage computer systems and software.
While not necessary, some employers may favour applicants with relevant IT certifications to prove their expertise in the field.
Consider completing a masters degree in computer science, information technology or system administration. This is not mandatory but doing so can give you a competitive edge and higher salary potential.
