What's it like to be a Paralegal?
Paralegals help lawyers prepare for cases by compiling documents and evidence, conducting research, drafting correspondence and communicating with the various parties involved in a case. In some cases, Paralegals also assist lawyers during trials. Paralegals need a strong knowledge of the law, the justice system and legal processes.
Tasks and duties
- Corresponding with a lawyer’s clients and witnesses.
- Researching a case and evidence.
- Carrying out investigations and evidence collection.
- Documenting testimonies and interrogations.
- Creating legal documents.
- Attending court proceedings.
How to become a Paralegal
A combination of education and practical experience is required to become a Paralegal.

Complete a bachelor degree in legal studies or a related field.

Take a Paralegal associate degree or certificate.
- 3.
Gain experience. You could undertake an internship at a law firm to build experience. It can also be beneficial to build experience as a Litigation Clerk or Secretary at a law firm.

Consider choosing a specialty. Paralegals can specialise in litigation, labour law, government and other fields.
