What's it like to be a Supply Chain Manager?
Supply Chain Managers oversee the different processes in a supply chain. They plan and manage an overall workflow, which can include the purchasing of goods, items and materials, storing goods and distributing them to customers. Supply Chain Managers are also responsible for keeping track of packages and ensuring they’re in suitable condition. They work to ensure that all goods are free from damage and arrive safely at their destination. Supply Chain Managers coordinate with many departments and stakeholders to maintain the resources necessary for a successful supply chain.
Tasks and duties
- Creating effective strategies to refine processes in a supply chain.
- Assisting with logistical tasks, such as maintenance, shipment and delivery.
- Establishing good relationships with suppliers and distributors.
- Maintaining and storing the required quantity of supplies and materials.
- Purchasing goods from suppliers and negotiating prices.
- Hiring and training supply chain staff.
How to become a Supply Chain Manager
To become a Supply Chain Manager, you need a formal educational background paired with experience. Leadership capabilities are important for this role.
Complete a bachelor degree in supply chain management, business administration or the field you’re looking to enter (for example, engineering).
Consider completing a masters degree in supply chain management. This can equip you with expert skills and improve your earning potential.
Gain experience. You could start off in an entry-level job as a Supply Chain Officer or Warehouse Assistant.
