What's it like to be an Accounts Assistant?
An Accounts Assistant has a fundamental understanding of basic accounting and administrative work. Their daily tasks include keeping and updating a record of transactions, issuing receipts, ensuring the validity of transactions, starting paperwork for signature, and performing other administrative support functions.
Tasks and duties
- Making, receiving, and logging calls for Accountants.
- Taking messages on behalf of the office.
- Filing, organising, and archiving physical or digital documents and correspondence.
- Issuing receipts and other accounting documents.
- Assisting in bookkeeping and other basic accounting functions.
Some medium to large accounting firms rely on Accounts Assistants to assist multiple Accountants and are considered a shared resource. Depending on the job description, Accounts Assistants also help in managing the books where they can gain experience and move towards becoming a licensed Accountant.
How to become an Accounts Assistant
To work as an Accounts Assistant, you usually need to complete formal education. Mastering the common tasks in the role could lead to more opportunities as an Accountant, Account Supervisor or other related role that specialises in accounting.
Complete a degree in accounting, bookkeeping, or a finance-related field. Studies will take four years at a recognised educational institution.
Get experience as an entry-level Bookkeeper using digital accounting software such as SAP or other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
Take up certification courses in accounting and bookkeeping. This will add value to your experience even if you are starting as an entry-level candidate.
Stay updated with the latest accounting rules such as Singapore Financial Reporting Standards (SFRS) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Being familiar with these standard accounting standards will give you an edge in getting hired.
